Originally reserved respectfully for Japanese tea ceremonies, matcha has travelled and gained recognition throughout the world. In Malaysia, the popularity of matcha has expanded beyond the traditional latte — think desserts, skincare, or even lifestyle. But why is matcha more than just a trend or a green drink? Let’s really think about the evolution of matcha and what it means to café culture in the local area.
Matcha is a finely powdered green tea made from tea leaves that have been harvested and specially grown for processing into matcha. Matcha is different from green tea as the tea leaves are steeped for their flavor and then discarded, while with matcha, you are drinking the whole leaf which provides higher levels of antioxidants, chlorophyll, and caffeine.
Why Malaysians are Hooked on Matcha
The increasing popularity of matcha cafés in KL and beyond is not a coincidence. Here are some of the reasons behind its success:
- Health-conscious lifestyle: Millennials and Gen Z are all searching for an alternative to sugary drinks – matcha has a “cleaner” feel, but still provides energy.
- Instagrammable: Its bright green looks great on social media.
- Unlimited Uses: Matcha works in drinks, cakes, pastries, ice cream, and savoury items.
- Cultural appeal: Japanese influence on Malaysian dining (from omakase to ramen) has increased the appeal of matcha even further.

How Matcha Differs from the Coffee Craze
Matcha is a different experience from coffee. Coffee celebrates strong energy and artisanal-brewed beverages, while matcha offers something different:
- Calm, sustained focus vs. caffeine-fueled jitters: Matcha is composed of L-thean, which has unique properties to allow a gradual lift with no crash afterwards.
- Ceremony instead of café environment: Coffee culture is warm and industrial, or artisanal. Matcha encourages mindfulness and ritual.
- Niche vs. mainstream: Coffee feels simple and universal, while matcha still feels exclusive. This creates curiosity.
Tips for First-Time Matcha Drinkers
If you’re curious yet unsure about the strong earthy flavor, here are some ways to ease into matcha:
- Start sweet: Try a matcha latte with honey and/or vanilla.
- Play with combinations: Ceremonial grade (for purists) vs. culinary (for cooking and desserts).
- Pair it with food: Matcha can go with a pastry, or with a light savory bite.
- Don’t go overboard: Matcha can be strong and impactful — Typically, one serving is enough in a day.
The Future of Matcha
Matcha is not just a passing phase—it is evolving. Expect to see the following soon:
- Matcha mocktails at bars.
- Hybrid fusions of desserts, such as pandan-matcha, durian-matcha, etc.
- Wellness matcha products that include supplements and spa treatments.
- Cafés from outside of KL having some localized versions of matcha drinks.
Given the increasing number of Malaysians who are pursuing healthier lifestyles, matcha will develop from a fad to daily habits.
There is no doubt the matcha trend is gaining momentum in Malaysia. Whether we drink it as a creamy latte, in a burnt cheesecake or in a matcha skin care cream, it is obvious it is here to stay.
So, the next time someone asks you out for a coffee, try suggesting: “Let’s grab a matcha instead.”
